Backend Software Engineer: APM

Observe is redefining how companies manage operational telemetry data (logs, metrics, traces, etc.) generated by modern distributed applications. Traditional logging, monitoring, and APM tools are often too complex, leading to excessive costs and lengthy incident resolution times. Many solutions fall short because the necessary data is either too costly to retain or too cumbersome to access. Observe changes the game, offering a single observability platform for all telemetry data, built on a cloud-native data warehouse that delivers unmatched scale and cost efficiency. No filtering, no sampling—just comprehensive, uncompromised observability.

The APM (application performance monitoring) team is responsible for building backend features for guided user flows. We are responsible for a large area of product domains, including: APM (service explorer, trace explorer), metric explorer, alerting, infrastructure monitoring (Kubernetes explorer).

The APM team deliverables are always motivated by direct product goals, which often include technical work on multiple backend stacks across the company. We produce fast-paced MVPs, as well as go deep into the computation platform to do sophisticated benchmarks and optimizations. You'll play a pivotal role in understanding the use cases and user journeys, and make them happen efficiently and performantly.

What you'll be doing:

- Design, implementation, and project execution for product backends

- Own on various products domains, preferably become a long term owner and domain expert

- Collaborate closely with product and frontend teams to shape product behavior, supporting customers with advanced use cases

- Collaborate closely with other backend teams, to improve our computation platform (API backend, query language and compiler, query optimization, streaming data pipeline, etc.)

- Product robust and practical tests and monitoring

You'll be a good fit if you have:

- BS in Computer Science (or equivalent) and solid computer science fundamentals

- 2+ years of backend development experience

- Backend generalist experience: comfortable working across backend and infrastructure stacks, even unfamiliar ones

- Experience using Observability tools

You'll be an ideal fit if you have:

- Experience driving projects: executing and navigating ambiguities

- Experience shaping products with user feedbacks

- Experience optimizing queries or data pipelines at scale

- Experience developing query/storage engine for metric and tracing products (TSDB, Prometheus, Jaegar, etc.)
